Overview

RM. Gumarang Jaya stands out as a beloved Padang restaurant situated in the heart of Medan, Sumatera Utara. Nestled along Jl. Brigjend Katamso, this eatery offers a deep dive into the rich culinary heritage of West Sumatra, specializing in traditional dishes that showcase authentic flavors and local ingredients. The location is a magnet for both locals and visitors seeking genuine Padang cuisine, with lunch hours often bustling due to its popularity.

The star attraction here is undeniably the fried chicken, made from “ayam kampung,” or free-range chicken. Unlike conventional broilers, these smaller birds bring a concentrated depth of flavor, with a remarkable balance of crispiness and tender, juicy meat that practically melts off the bone. This fried chicken has earned high praise, rivaling even international chain standards, embodying a rustic, unpretentious style that highlights the essence of Padang cooking.

Aside from the fried chicken, RM. Gumarang Jaya offers a variety of iconic side dishes that enrich the dining experience. The “peyek udang” (shrimp crackers) are noted for their lightness and generous shrimp content, providing a satisfying crunch with every bite. Other standouts include the semur jengkol, a traditional fermented dogfruit stew with a distinct earthy flavor, and the fish head curry, which boasts tender meat soaked in a rich, aromatic gravy—a true comfort dish beloved by many.

A distinctive feature of the dining style is the option to order “bungkus rice,” where the rice is mixed with sauces, vegetables, and chili before being wrapped in fragrant banana leaf. This not only infuses the rice with subtle aromas but also creates a unique texture and flavor dynamic that complements the robust side dishes. Even when dining in, many patrons prefer this style for its vibrant taste and convenient presentation.

The restaurant itself exudes a lively, bustling atmosphere often described as chaotic yet inviting—reflecting the authentic street-food vibe rather than a polished, corporate setting. This creates an approachable space that welcomes families, groups of friends, and solo diners craving rich, flavorful cuisine without pretense.

For beverages, the simple plain black tea complements the spiced dishes well, while fresh juices and an external sugar cane vendor add local refreshing options. Though customers wish for more variety like coffee, the current drink selection aligns naturally with the menu’s bold flavors.

While parking can be a challenge, especially during peak hours, and kitchen cleanliness might show a raw behind-the-scenes reality, these quirks do little to detract from the overall experience. RM. Gumarang Jaya’s strength lies in its unwavering commitment to authentic Padang flavors, affordable prices, and the warm, communal feel of traditional Indonesian dining.

In summary, RM. Gumarang Jaya serves as a culinary landmark for those eager to explore Sumatra’s gastronomic soul. It is ideally suited for food lovers who value genuine taste, cultural richness, and a down-to-earth dining environment over polished elegance.

One of my favorite Padang restaurant in the city. They're always packed around lunch time, dinner might be an option for those who doesn't want to wait. Other option is to visit their branch which is located around 1km away. Even when I dined in, I usually ordered 'take out' for the rice, as the portion is bigger and they already mixed all the sauces, veggies and chili. All warped in banana leaf for extra fragrance. For 'take out rice but dine in', they will still serve you the side dishes like normal. Recommended side dishes are the fried chicken (this one is extremely popular, the size is small but that's why all the flavor is concentrated, the skin is very crispy and the meat is tender to the bone), peyek udang (shrimp cracker, crispy and big with loads of small shrimp), green chili with shallots and tauco (tauco: fermented yellow soybean, their signature chili), perkedel (potato cake), semur jengkol (dog fruit stew), fish head curry, fried fish. If you want extra flavor, try mixed the rice with kecap asin (light soy sauce). For beverages, I just order plain black tea, but juices are popular option too. There is a sugar cane vendor outside the restaurant which you can order from, only IDR 5K. Price is considerably cheap. We ate 4 rice, 7 pieces of chicken, 1 plate of jengkol stew, 1 peyek udang, 4 plain tea and btw chili is on the house for only IDR 250K.

We were brought here by our Indonesian cousin who happens to be a local around this area. I’ve always loved Padang food since I was young, and this place didn’t disappoint. Our experience was great, both the food and the service, probably because we came early before the lunch crowd. Even though we dined in, we asked for bungkus rice wrapped in banana leaves with mixed vegetables, chili, and gravy all packed in. I guess this is the trend here? The other dishes were served separately based on what we ordered. The gulai fish head was superb, huge and so tender, with the rich and flavorful gravy absorbed into every corner of the bones and meat. The peyek udang was light and crispy with a generous amount of shrimp, you can taste shrimp in every bite. The ikan goreng was a bit too hard for our liking though. As for the chili condiments, they were just perfect to accompany all the dishes. We skipped the famous fried chicken since we already had two fish heads, which was more than enough.

This place is famous for its fried chicken and you will not be satisfied to only have one or two. This place is packed during the lunch time, you'd better come before or after lunch time.it is a west sumatran style restaurant. The fries chicken is quite small since they use "ayam kampung" instead of broiler. The taste is crispy abd umami that makes you bite to the bone

The fried chicken is a must. They use 'ayam kampung' here. Skinny but tasteful. Great traditional dishes. I have nothing to say about the food here. Beverages? Wish they served coffee as well. Cleanliness? Don't go to the kitchen otherwise you might lose your appetite. Parking? Crowded, especially on lunch hours.
